Hiking

We recommend downloading the AllTrails App to find the hikes that fit your level of fitness before setting out.  Both islands have a number of wide-ranging hikes from easy strolls to strenuous ascents.

Here are some of our favorites. Be sure to do a google search before you set out in case there are any alerts.

HAWAII ISLAND HIKES - COMING SOON

MAUI HIKES

Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls – Hana

This is the perfect ending to a day trip to Hana.  Located beyond the town of Hana, park in the Haleakala National Park lot and cross the street to the trailhead.  This is a minimum 3-hr round trip hike that covers some amazing scenery from a large banyan tree, a bridge over cascading waterfalls and a towering bamboo forest before reaching Waimoku Falls at the end of the hike.

La Perouse Bay - Makena

This one is recommended for morning hours as it is along the coast with little shelter from the sun.  Bring water, sturdy shoes and a hat.  You can follow this as far as you want as there is no specific ending point.  The trail is rocky and not recommended for young children.  You will likely see some small herds of goats and may run into a few people on horseback.  Be sure to stay on the trail along the coast.

Poli Poli Upcountry – Kula

This hike is at a higher elevation and often shrouded in mist so bring some layers.

Haleakala Crater Upcountry - Haleakala Summit

This is your chance to hike down into a dormant volcano and is best on a clear day - otherwise you won't see much if the clouds are settled in the crater.  Hike down as far as you like but remember, if you hike an hour down, plan on double that to get back since it will be uphill. Use the same parking pass you got from parking for Pipiwai Trail since one parking pass is good for 10 days.
